About the Monkey Mask

The Monkey Mask, or Monkey Plant, is a member of the Monstera family (scientific name: Monstera adansonii). The name comes from the plant's quirky leaves, which are naturally full of holes and vaguely resemble the face of a monkey. In Holland, they get straight to the point and call it "the hole plant".

This type of monstera is native to Central America, specifically Mexico. Its holey-leaved vines can easily grow to 6 feet (though this is much shorter than how long they would grow in the wild), so can either be left trailing from the pot or supported to grow upwards around a bamboo or moss pole. A small indoor trellis is another inventive way of showing your Monkey Plant's leaves off to their full effect, and creating your own urban jungle.

Either way, the Monstera adansonii is a stimulating plant to look after. Given a bright environment without direct light, which can damage the plant's leaves, watered when the soil becomes dry, and dusted regularly to remove debris from the leaves, the Monkey Mask will become both a stylish addition to its surroundings and an air-purifying investment.

While it does have rather a lot of holes in its leaves, the fact that the Monkey Mask grows tall quickly and produces copious amounts of large leaves means that it is still very effective at removing airborne pollutants and toxin particles from its environment. The leaves are somewhat prone to gathering dust due to their size and unusual shape, so gently wiping them with a damp cloth when you see dust accumulate is the best bet for keeping your plant healthy. Dust can block the intake of carbon dioxide and the reoxygenation of the surrounding air, so checking that your monstera can breathe easily will make sure that you can too!

Be sure to keep your monstera adansonii out of reach of any pets - while it isn't toxic, it can cause animals discomfort if consumed, so this is best avoided.
